Espanyol vs FC Barcelona – La Liga Match Review – 8/12/2018

Pink Delights at the RCDE

This is not a regular review - it’s just some random thoughts.

Traditionally the Catalan Derby is hotly contested and the physical Espanyol comes in with that extra energy to give Barcelona a rough time. Espanyol are always a difficult opponent, especially in their own den.

But the unsuspecting Espanyol had to bear the brunt of an inspired Messi Tsunami, which swallowed them up in its wake.

Messi, Dembele and Suarez scored for Barca and put the game beyond the reach of Espanyol. It could have been even worse had not Suarez and Messi missed a couple of chances. By half time, it was 3-0 and the game was over and out.

Espanyol came out with an attacking mindset in the 2nd half and dominated for about 20 minutes. But the damage was already done and all they could look for was 1 or 2 consolation goals. Sadly, VAR ruled the one that they scored, as rightly offside.

The final say was Messi’s as he scored with another sumptuous free kick leaving poor Diego Lopez wondering what did he do, to deserve such punishment not once, but twice on the same night.

Was very impressed with the way Dembele was trying his best to link with the team in the match and his goal was a beauty. The enthusiastic Vidal put in a plucky shift which was commendable. Suarez was off target, but the goal he scored was awesome and important.

Everyone was good in their positions for Barcelona. But then Messi had broken up Espanyol so badly that they seemed to melt away in front of him.

Overall every one were totally blown over by the majestic brilliance of a player who is currently ranked 5th among the world’s best and who was recently labelled as the guy with just one skillset by an aging legend.

Wow! If the 5th best with just one skill is this good, the top four must be truly awesome and way better. I just cant wait to see those 4 players.

As for the fans, we experienced mystical magic, while the opposing supporters were left confused whether to cheer or boo their chief tormentor. Everyone knows that he was playing the same game as the rest, but he was at a level that’s incomparable. He was doing everything at will and inspired his teammates to raise their game in turn, which made the 4-0 win all the more impressive.

Please Ballon d’Or keep voting Messi the 5th best in the world and with due respect Mr. Pele – please continue with your invaluable views about Lionel Messi – because it’s working well for everyone at FC Barcelona.

After that game, all you were left with - was the image of the little genius, bending in his signature  freekicks, passing at will, smiling and celebrating with his team mates in salmon pink outfits and a befuddled goalkeeper with a hapless look, unable to believe his own eyes.  (In fact I felt like giving Lopez a big hug after that 2nd goal from Messi)

As for Lionel Messi - this is not normal by any standards. He is a cute and crazy guy who believes and enjoys this brand of football magic and we can’t seem to get enough of him.

So bring it on Leo - the sky is the limit for you and our expectations from you (because we are crazy too - LOL!).
