The Sachin Syndrome

The Sachin Syndrome

I keep wondering as to what would have happened to Indian Cricket has not a little guy with a mop of curly hair and an innocent smile, walked in to bat for India - in 1989 against Pakistan in a test match. At the age of 16, an entire nation's aspirations rested on those young shoulders.

The Sachin Tendulkar era began with a bang !

We all grew up watching this prodigy climb mountains and pull a mediocre Indian team along with full force. He become synonymous with Indian Cricket and he had been the backbone of Indian Cricket , despite the Walls, Princes and Nawabs - who became a part of the team.

There was something nice about Sachin which made us all take to him instantly. His down to earth nature and the way he enjoyed playing his shots, spilled over to the audience. Watching Sachin in full flow, is pure joy. The expectations of the entire nation rested on those young shoulders and the way he had carried it all these years is really commendable.

He is an iconic figure who inspired many. The expectations from this little master is so great that every time he loses, the disappointment is huge. Even today, if India is batting, I would perk up instantly, if Sachin is at the crease. I simply love to watch him play. The magic of his shots and the way he goes about making the person at the other end fell comfortable is something to behold. The way he runs between the wickets - he is still the best among the current lot.

When we look back at the last world cup, a lot of people say that it was the Ganguly-Wright combination which took us to the finals. All you detractors- face it. Our performance depended on whether one guy clicked or not and that was none other than the Man of the Tournament- Sachin Tendulkar. Whatever said and done- he is still one of the important players who can carry India to victory.

There are many who say Sachin does not bat when it comes to crunch situations and also that he should carry on to bat till the end. Why single out Sachin alone ? Its a team game. As an opener all he needs to guarantee is a good start. The other 10 can atleast try and finish it well.

Not that Sachin has always been a success whenever he has batted. There were bad patches and turbulent times. The recent bad phase - has been the most trying of all times, because more than the fans, the media were into scrutinizing each and every one of his move- putting additional pressure on person. If only they could leave him alone and let him be his self.
